Dreams

Dreams
By Langston Hughes

Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.

Hold fast to dreams
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow.

Hughes uses the metaphor of a broken-winged bird to show that if we let go of our dreams, we would be unable to soar and live up to our potential. He also uses the metaphor of the barren field to show that if we let go of our dreams, life would be dead and empty, like a wasteland.
